If you have Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and your Social Security Disability claim is headed to a hearing, preparation is key. Even though MS is a recognized condition, you still need strong evidence to prove how it limits your ability to work.
What the Judge Will Look For
The judge will want to know how MS affects your daily life. This includes:
- Difficulty walking, using your hands, or maintaining balance
- Severe fatigue that makes it hard to focus or stay active
- Trouble with memory or concentration
- Flare-ups that cause unpredictable bad days
Be ready to talk about your symptoms in your own words. Use real-life examples of things you can no longer do or struggle to do—like standing at the stove, using a keyboard, or keeping up with housework.
Medical Evidence That Helps
Bring or submit:
- MRI results showing brain or spinal cord lesions
- Neurologist records
- Physical or occupational therapy notes
- A completed RFC form from your doctor that clearly shows your limitations
- Prescription lists and medication side effects
- Statements from family or friends about how MS affects your daily life
Tips for Your Testimony
- Be honest and specific
- Don’t exaggerate, but don’t downplay your limitations either
- Explain your good days and bad days
- Mention how often you need to rest or take breaks
- Talk about how long you can sit, stand, walk, or concentrate before needing to stop
