Can You Get Disability Benefits for Autism?

Maybe. Social Security may provide disability benefits for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). These benefits come through either SSDI (for adults with a work history) or SSI (for children or adults with low income and few assets).

How Does Autism Qualify?

Social Security looks at how autism affects your ability to function day-to-day. To qualify, you must show serious challenges in:

  • Social interaction
  • Communication (spoken and unspoken)
  • Repetitive behaviors
  • Adjusting to changes in routine

They also consider how these symptoms affect your life at home, school, or work.

For Children (SSI)

Children with autism may qualify for SSI if their condition severely limits daily life and their family meets financial limits. Helpful records include:

  • School reports
  • Therapy records (like speech or ABA)
  • Doctor or specialist evaluations

For Adults (SSDI or SSI)

Adults may qualify for SSDI if autism prevents them from working full-time and they have a work history. If they don’t have enough work credits, they might still qualify for SSI. Strong evidence includes:

  • Neuropsychological evaluations
  • Job history or failed job attempts
  • Support from family or caregivers

What Evidence Helps Most

  • A diagnosis from a doctor or psychologist
  • IQ and adaptive functioning tests
  • Therapy notes (speech, OT, ABA)
  • Statements from teachers, employers, or caregivers
